‘IT city’ turning into a rock climber’s paradise

Bengaluru city, which already goes by several monikers such as ‘garden city,’ ‘IT city’ and ‘pub capital,’ is slowly adding another feather to its cap. Its outskirts are turning into rock climbing havens for those who are looking for adventure, or to try something new, or simply to get fit.

Among the popular bouldering and rock-climbing destinations are Turahalli, Ramanagaram, Savandurga, Kabbaladurga, Raogudlu, Avati and Antara Gange.

Keerthi Pais, advisor to the General Thimmaiah National Adventure Academy, said that over the last three years, as many as 150 new routes had come up in and around Bengaluru bring the total count to over 300. He said that there are different types of routes based on one’s stamina.

“Rock climbing gives a person an adrenaline rush,” Mr. Pais said. He explained that while many beginners are venturing into the sport, there are also trainers, popularly called “weekend warriors”, who use spaces around the city to practise when they are preparing to climb an intensive route.

It is not just adults who are trying their hand at the sport today.

Dakshayini Kanna, principal, Harvest International School, said schools were encouraging students to participate in rock climbing as it helps improve their fitness levels, reflexes and increases concentration. It also helps develop several skill sets related to first-aid and camping. She said that students of her school had been on treks in Ramanagaram and Kanakapura.

Anupam Agarwal, Director General, General Thimmaiah National Adventure Academy, said that they were coming up with new routes and encouraging students to participate in these activities more. “We are also looking at nurturing climbers to become trainers so that they spread awareness about it in their localities,” he said.

Bouldering championship

In order to promote bouldering in the city, the State government in partnership with other organisations, will conduct the Bengaluru Bouldering Championship on September 1 and 2. This will be conducted at the Koamangala Indoor stadium. There will be events for both beginners and professionals. Besides this, a mountain film festival will also be organised where movies on the Himalayas will be screened.
