KANNUR: The district administration is all set to launch a community-oriented adventure sports program in the district as part of a campaign for preventive healthcare against lifestyle diseases. The programme, ‘Month of Adventure’, will be inaugurated on May 6 and it will be held on four Sundays, said district collector Mir Mohammed Ali.
As part of this, various programmes including bicycling, marathon, swimming and kayaking would be held and it would be open to public, he said.
The adventure programme would begin with a bicycle rally from Kannur town to Muzhappilangad beach, which also include a 3-km long bicycle race on the beach, on May 6. On May 13, a 10.5 km quarter marathon connecting historical sites in and around Thalassery would be held.
The third one would be a swimming event in which the participants have to cross Valapattanam river at Parassinikkadavu, on May 20. The last programme, on May 27 would be kayaking in the Kavvayi backwaters near Payyannur. The Collector also said that a beach gym would be started soon on the Payyambalam beach here.
The main objective of the adventure sports programme, organised with the support of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), is to help the people imbibe a culture of sports to improve their health, at the same time help them have a close understanding of the history and culture of the district, said the organisers.
