Wildlife NGO rescues crocodile, python in Agra
AGRA: Wildlife SOS, a non-profit organisation (NGO), that works for conservation of forests and wildlife, rescued an injured Indian rock python and a crocodile on Sunday afternoon in Agra. The reptiles are currently under observation and will be released back into the wild once deemed fit by veterinarians.
The NGO had received a call from forest officials of Chambal about a massive crocodile sighting in Jajomai village in Agra on Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, it got a call on its helpline number about a nearly 12-foot-long python lying injured near Chakora Kgarol road in Agra.
A two-member rescue team dispatched by the NGO for the python, which turned out to have sustained a deep wound. The reptile was taken in by the Wildlife SOS team and is currently undergoing treatment.
Dr Ilayaraja, deputy director, veterinary services, Wildlife SOS, said, “The cause of the injury is yet to be determined. The reptile is twelve-foot long and weighs approximately 30 kg. We have sutured the wound and will be keeping the python under observation till it fully recovers.”
Meanwhile, the crocodile was spotted in a pond and left the villagers in panic. Accompanied by forest officials, a three-member team rushed to the location and rescued it.
Baiju Raj M.V, director conservation projects of Wildlife SOS, said, “The crocodile was nearly seven-foot long and appeared to be under stress due to the huge crowd that gathered around it. The team was careful not to anger the reptile any further while transferring it to rescue vehicle. Crocodiles are found in freshwater habitats including ponds, rivers, lakes and marshes and they can migrate to considerable distances on land in search of a more suitable habitat or prey.”
